Guerrilla Garden was inspired by the unruly front gardens in my local neighbourhood, the public-facing spaces where private gardens spill towards the street. I’m drawn to the ones that seem to resist tidiness: plants pushing through fences, leaves tangling together and flowers growing according to their own logic.
The painting developed from that sense of abundance and slight disorder. Broad leaves, flowering stems and flashes of vivid colour move across the surface, while recognisable botanical forms appear and disappear among loose brushwork and layered marks.
Rather than describing one particular garden, the work brings together observation, memory and invention. It celebrates the energy of plants that refuse to remain neatly contained.
Its generous scale gives the painting a strong presence, while the pale ground and open areas allow the composition to retain a sense of lightness.
