Original oil painting on canvas, Framed in raw Oak, 112 × 91 cm
Felix the House Plant is inspired by my love of indoor plants, particularly the ones that grow a little wild and seem determined to take over the room.
The painting began with the familiar shapes of tropical foliage, but gradually became a tangle of overlapping leaves, loose brushstrokes and unexpected colours. Soft pinks and creamy whites sit alongside fresh greens, mustard yellow and little flashes of blue.
I enjoyed playing with the shapes of the leaves, allowing them to merge into one another until it became difficult to tell where one plant ended and another began.
The result is a slightly unruly, imagined jungle, somewhere between a botanical painting and an abstraction.
